  5. Getting Ready for the UK IPO Fee Increase
UK IPO Fees

The UK Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO) has announced an increase in its official fees for trade marks, designs and patents. Now is the perfect time to review your portfolio before the higher fees come into effect.

Why the change?

The UK IPO’s fees have not been increased for many years. Over that time, inflation and rising operational costs have all contributed to the increase but the UK IPO will continue to be recognised globally for its comparatively low fees.

With the introduction of its biggest fee increase since 1998 for trade marks, 2016 for designs and 2018 for patents, the UK IPO will be able to continue investing in its systems while maintaining its high standard of service.

What’s happening?

The proposed fee increase will take effect from 1 April 2026, subject to Parliamentary approval and the current rates will remain until 31 March 2026.

On average, fees will increase by around 25%. For example:

  •  Trade-mark online application fee will increase from £170 to £205
  • Patent online application fee will increase from £60 to £75
  •  Design online application fee for a single design will increase from £50 to £60

What should you do next?

  • If you are planning to file a trade mark, design or patent application, you may wish to do so before 1 April 2026, under the old (lower) fee schedule to save costs.
  • If you have existing IP rights with renewal or opposition/invalidity actions coming up, check the timing. These fee increases affect not only new applications but also renewals, oppositions and related services.
  • Budgeting and IP-cost forecasts should be updated to reflect the higher fee levels post-April 2026.
